Unfair 2023

At (Un)Fair 2023, the essence of Ecuadorian art unfolded in a vibrant tapestry of color, psychedelia, and cultural introspection. This international event, known for its immersive contemporary art experience, provided a unique platform for the Proarte Foundation to showcase the rich artistic landscape of Ecuador.
From March 2nd to 5th, (Un)Fair returned with its second edition, hosting a diverse array of international galleries at Superstudio Maxi in Milan. The exhibition featured works by emerging and mid-career artists, blending well-known names with hidden gems that beckoned to be discovered.
One of the highlights of the event was the presence of Maureen Gubia, Esteban Jácome, Sebastian Wong and Judith Peris Gatell, whose work captivated audiences and sparked conversations about Ecuadorian identity.
The paintings showcased at (Un)Fair reflected a unique style influenced by the technological transition of the late 1990s, the turn of the century, and significant national events such as the crisis of ’99 and dollarization. According to Gubia, these artworks embody a sense of identity crisis, mirroring the fragmented national identity of Ecuador.
Living in Ecuador, with its unpredictable nature and mystical landscapes, adds to the enigmatic allure of the country. The inability to define what it means to be Ecuadorian gives rise to a sense of mystery and intrigue, which is reflected in the art showcased at (Un)Fair. For the artists, the exhibition was an opportunity to showcase the essence of Ecuadorian art and offer a glimpse into the cultural fabric of their country.
(Un)Fair 2023 was more than an art exhibition; it was a cultural exchange that transcended borders, bringing Ecuadorian art and identity to a global audience. The event underscored the importance of art in bridging cultural gaps and fostering understanding among diverse communities, making it a truly unforgettable experience for all involved.
